Are Eufy solar security cameras worth the extra money vs battery cams?

Are Eufy solar security cameras worth the extra money vs battery cams?
Key takeaways

Yes — if the spot gets a few hours of sun.

I own both. Battery cams used to last a couple of months. After about a year, I was charging every couple of weeks.

Solar S220: set it up, forgot about it. Moved it twice. Never plugged it in to charge.

What I actually showed

I asked if it’s worth a few extra dollars for solar Eufy cams vs battery ones. Not sponsored. I’ve owned both.

Battery: Stick them almost anywhere — under a tree, under an awning, indoor or outdoor — as long as they see the area. That’s the win.

The loss showed up over time. Battery life used to be a couple of months. Now maybe a couple of weeks. More motion, more notifications, more footage — it dies faster. Even with consistent traffic on the same spot, I saw a massive capacity drop over about a year.

Solar: Costs a few dollars more. Same basic camera stack, plus solar, plus extras sometimes extra features like AI came up in my video — not a lab I ran. Picture quality felt fairly similar to the battery options.

Big win: set-and-forget if you get at least a few hours of sunlight a day. I moved my solar unit twice. Never physically plugged it in to charge. Pretty huge.

S220: I have it. Loved it. Set it up. Forgot about it. Still get notifications as often as I want. Chickens, side doors, a specific pathway — not a huge broad coverage area.

Subscription / alt: I stay on Eufy for convenience and not paying extra subscription fees. If you need instant alerts and super clean, not-grainy footage, I named Blink. Blink Outdoor 4 was my favorite Blink — speed, clear footage, night/day, night vision, color vision, spotlight. I got a four-pack. Quality on Eufy is enough for us.

Bottom line in my video: solar better than battery for me. Weigh it for your yard.

Battery cams: place anywhere, then charge more

Placement is the whole point. Tree, awning, wherever it can see.

Don’t count on “months per charge” forever. Mine fell to weeks over about a year.

Owners on Reddit keep asking about battery drain and lifespan. Pattern: same capacity-drop worry I filmed — I’m not copying their percentages as my numbers.

Solar cams: extra money, less charging — if there’s sun

A few dollars more. Needs sun. If that spot gets a few hours a day, I stopped thinking about charging.

S220 is the keep from my video. Set it up. Forgot about it. Never plugged that solar unit in — even after two moves.

Does solar need direct sun?

Yes for the set-and-forget win in my video. A few hours of sunlight a day. Shade or awning is a battery job — that’s why battery placement still matters.

Spec, not a test I ran: Vendor FAQ talks “direct sunlight for at least two hours” and similar numbers — check the live listing / eufy FAQ. I didn’t meter sun hours in my video.

Under a tree or awning — solar or battery?

Stick with battery if the mount never sees real sun. That’s the placement freedom I filmed.

Pay a few dollars more for solar only if you can give it a few hours of sun. Otherwise you’re buying the panel and still climbing the ladder.

Owners on Reddit / Best Buy Q&A keep asking whether shade works. Pattern: sun = solar win; covered porch / tree = battery.

Why might I still charge a “solar” cam?

If it doesn’t get that sun, the solar win dies — you’re back to charging.

With a few hours of sun, my S220 never needed a plug. Moved twice. Still set-and-forget.

Owners on Best Buy Q&A keep asking “why does the listing say charge from time to time?” Pattern: solar doesn’t erase a dead-shade mount.

Spec strip

Said on camera: owns solar + battery Eufy · S220 set-and-forget · never plugged solar in (moved twice) · battery months → weeks over ~1 year · more motion = faster drain · few hours of sun · solar a few dollars more · picture fairly similar · no extra subscription pitch for Eufy · Blink Outdoor 4 named for speed/clarity · chickens / side doors / pathway, not wide coverage.

Spec, not a test I ran: Exact mAh, sun-hour meters, “90 days,” separate external panel, Power Manager Battery vs External toggle — not demonstrated in my video. Check the live listing or the sister S220 page: https://ohanareviewsblog.com/eufy-solocam-s220/

Pros

  • Solar S220 really was set-and-forget for me
  • Never plugged that solar unit in — even after two moves
  • Battery placement freedom is real (tree / awning)
  • No extra subscription pitch is why I stay on Eufy
  • Honest capacity-drop story on the battery side
  • Not sponsored — own money

Cons

  • Solar needs sun — shade/awning spots lose that win
  • Battery capacity fell months → weeks over about a year
  • Not a wide-area cam in my video — pathway / doors / chickens
  • Extra money vs battery (I didn’t lock a number)
  • Blink Outdoor 4 is the spoken alt if you want faster/cleaner

Who it’s for / not for

For: Someone okay spending a bit more for solar, with a few hours of sun, who wants set-and-forget and no extra subscription — pathway / door / specific spot, like my chickens and side doors.

Not for: Deep shade / under-awning only (battery wins). Or anyone who needs instant, super-clean, not-grainy alerts — Blink Outdoor 4 path I named.

FAQ

Are Eufy solar cameras worth the extra money vs battery?
Yes for me — if the cam sees a few hours of sun. S220 is the keep. Battery placement is freer. Battery life got worse over about a year.

Does the SoloCam S220 need direct sun?
Yes for set-and-forget in my video. A few hours of sunlight a day. Shade or awning is a battery job. Spec, not a test I ran: vendor “two hours” language — check the listing.

If it’s solar, why might I still have to charge it?
No sun, no solar win — you’re charging again. With a few hours of sun, I never plugged my S220 in. Owners on Best Buy Q&A keep asking this. Pattern: listing “charge from time to time” ≠ a dead-shade mount.

Do Eufy battery cams lose capacity over time?
Mine did. Used to be a couple of months. After about a year, maybe a couple of weeks. More motion drains faster. I’m not inventing Reddit drain percentages as my numbers.

Is the SoloCam S220 actually set-and-forget?
Yes for me. Set it up. Forgot about it. Moved it twice. Never plugged that solar unit in. Still getting notifications.

Do I need a Eufy subscription for S220?
No extra monthly fee is why I stay on Eufy. Quality is enough for us. Spec, not a test I ran: vendor FAQ also says no monthly fee on the eufy app.

Tree or awning mount — solar or battery?
Stick with battery if that mount never sees real sun. Pay a few dollars more for solar only if you can give it a few hours of sun. Owners on Reddit / Best Buy Q&A keep asking whether shade works. Pattern: covered porch / tree = battery.

Blink Outdoor 4 or Eufy S220?
Eufy S220 if you want solar set-and-forget and no extra subscription. Blink Outdoor 4 if you want speed and cleaner footage — that was my favorite Blink. I got a four-pack. Sister compare: https://ohanareviewsblog.com/eufy-vs-blink-vs-wyze-2026/
