This is the DJI Action 5 Pro — potentially the best action camera on the market. Genuine experience, mostly footage.
Used it about a month: woods, fields, cold, some rain, everyday vlog, kids/family hand-off. Not sponsored by DJI.
Excellent for everyday people who want video/photo without the phone. Check the live listing.

What I actually showed

About 90% of the video is Action 5 Pro footage from the past month. Woods / fields walks. Cold mornings (about 20°; wind chill down around −5°). Rain-ready outdoors. Everyday vlog — chickens, farm life, windy leaves, sunset, night mode / darker shots. Selfie-stick jostle for built-in stab. Hand it to someone push-and-play.
What did I actually shoot?
Walking woods and fields. Cold temps. Some rain. Wind chill around −5°. Another morning around 20° — handled like a champ. If it rains again, I’d still take it outside. Everyday vlogging outdoors (not a hunting montage — still outdoors).
Hand it to anybody — kids, family, a technically challenged buddy — push and play, no real tutorial.
Mic, stab, size
Built-in microphone only. No boost. No external mic. Differentiates voices vs background. Pretty windy days — still pretty decent at keeping wind under control.
Stabilization demo: not 360° horizon lock, not RockSteady — built-in stabilization. Selfie stick, awkward angles, jostling — crystal clean, not too jittery to use later.
Compact / discrete — people hardly notice it. Great if you’re nervous about flashing a big camera.
Specs I named + night + who for
1/1.3-inch sensor (higher dynamic range / more stops — better final photo/video). 4K60 and “all that other good stuff” (I assume you know the sheet).
Day and night. Sunset. Night mode — decent for a 1/1.3″ sensor; clean in lit areas; not grainy like a lot of other cams in the dark. Easy to use and set up.
Who: everyday person who wants video/photo with something other than their phone — phone is a distraction, or upgrade a little without spending $1200 on the next cellphone. Used GoPro for years, Canon R50, phone, other cams — confident call.
Spec strip
Said on camera: DJI Action 5 Pro; potentially best action cam; ~1 month use; woods/cold/rain; −5° wind chill; ~20° morning; rain-OK outdoors; push-and-play handoff; built-in mic only (no boost/external); wind handling decent; built-in stab (not horizon lock / not RockSteady); compact/discrete; 1/1.3″ sensor; 4K60 named; day+night / night mode; not grainy in dark lit areas; easy setup; not sponsored by DJI; vs phone distraction / vs $1200 phone upgrade; GoPro / Canon R50 / phone experience.
Shown: outdoor farm/woods/sunset/night boardwalk stills.
Listing: Spec, not a permanent price — Action 5 price moves. Check the live listing (no cam dollar spoken).
Pros
Cold + rain outdoors — handled ~20° mornings / −5° wind chill
Hand it to kids/friends — push-and-play, no tutorial
Built-in mic only — still decent in wind (no external / boost)
Built-in stabilization on selfie stick — clean even at awkward angles
Compact / discrete for everyday vlog
Night mode on the 1/1.3″ sensor — clean in lit areas, less grainy than a lot of small cams; 4K60 in the mix
Cons
Built-in mic only — no external mic in this footage
1/1.3″ isn’t the biggest sensor for night — I admit that
This cut is built-in stab only — not horizon lock / RockSteady
Not a cinema / Pocket 3 cam — everyday action cam, not that lane
Who it’s for / not for
For: everyday outdoors + family vloggers who want a small action cam they can hand to a kid/friend and actually use in cold/rain/day/night instead of the phone.
Not for: people hunting a pocket “pro cinema” Pocket 3 vibe (different post); 360 body hunters; anyone who needs external-mic-only workflows I didn’t run.
How this compares
I use the Action 5 for everyday outdoors and family stuff — woods, cold mornings, rain-OK days, hand it to the kids, built-in mic, built-in stab, compact. In my video I’m not running horizon lock or RockSteady. Night on the 1/1.3″ was pretty decent, not the biggest sensor. 4K60. Not sponsored. I’ve used GoPro for years, a Canon R50, and my phone — and I’d rather this than burning $1200 on the next cellphone upgrade.
GoPro Mission 1 Pro vs this cam: I filmed that side-by-side. Full honest vs lives on the sister page — GoPro Mission 1 Pro vs Action 5 Pro (video y_azWTsYdcU). This Action 5 cut is the everyday/family lane, not a lab dump of that vs. Go there for the head-to-head.
What other reviewers said (their tests — not mine in my video):
- PCMag (Jim Fisher) — Editors’ Choice; calls out class-leading battery and strong 4K action-cam performance vs GoPro rivals. PCMag: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Review
- WIRED (Scott Gilbertson) — industry-leading battery life and clearly better low light than Hero 13 in his hands; less thrilled with default color. WIRED: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Review
- Trusted Reviews (Sam Kieldsen) — strong everyday execution (battery, waterproofing, stab); SuperNight not as transformative as the marketing. Trusted Reviews: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Review
Beyond my video:
- If you want the pocket gimbal / “cinema-ish” handheld lane, that’s a different tool — see Osmo Pocket 3. I didn’t compare Pocket 3 vs Action 5 in my video.
- For a tiny body or 360 footage, see their sisters (GO 3, X5) — this page isn’t that shootout.
Still pick Action 5 from my video if: you want everyday outdoors + family hand-offs, cold/rain-OK, built-in mic + built-in stab, compact, decent night for 1/1.3″, and a step up from the phone without a $1200 phone upgrade. If you need the Mission 1 head-to-head, use the sister. Check the live listing for cam price — I didn’t lock a dollar in my video.
