Quick take
To watch live and get motion alerts, no. To save recordings or get person and package alerts, yes. The camera is $99.99, but it has no storage of its own. Arlo’s FAQ says cloud video storage and object detection need a paid Arlo Secure plan. It does pack a big 14,790mAh battery and a built-in 1.2W solar panel, and Arlo says it goes on sale Oct 13, 2026. I have not filmed this cam. First impressions only.

What I actually know right now
I have not mounted this camera, and there is no KeliiDiscovers footage of it. Everything below comes from Arlo’s product page and FAQ, Arlo’s Sep 29 press release, Arlo’s blog, and Gizmodo’s launch story, unless I say otherwise.

The catch: what $99.99 gets you without a plan
Here’s how Arlo splits it on its own FAQ:
- Free, no plan: motion notifications and the live video feed.
- Needs an Arlo Secure plan: video cloud storage, interactive notifications, and object detection (person, package, vehicle). Arlo’s page also lists 60-day video history and its Early Warning System alerts as plan features.
- The camera comes with a free 1-month trial. After that, Arlo’s page says plans start at $7.99 a month, billed annually. Check Arlo’s plan page for current pricing.
There’s no memory card slot on the spec sheet. Arlo says an optional SmartHub (sold separately) adds local storage. Gizmodo reports the hub doesn’t bring back object detection.
So without a plan, you can look in live and get pinged, but you can’t scroll back to the clip. I expect that’s the line most no-monthly-fee shoppers care about. It’s the same question on my Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus post and my Reolink Argus 4 Pro post.
Solar vs battery: what the specs say
Arlo calls this its first solar-powered camera. The panel is built in, so there’s no separate panel to mount.
- Panel: 1.2W, integrated.
- Battery: 14,790mAh.
- Sun needed: as little as 2 hours of direct sun a day. Arlo says that powers about 50 10-second recordings a day.
- No sun: up to 6 months on a full charge. Arlo’s footnote says battery life varies with settings, activity, and environment.
- First charge: Arlo’s FAQ says if you don’t charge it with USB-C first, it can take 15 to 25 days of direct sun to fill. A USB-C charging cable comes in the box.
Spec, not a test I ran.

Mounting spot matters. Arlo says to avoid eaves, roof overhangs, covered porches, heavy tree shade, and tight side yards between buildings. If you’re weighing solar against a plain battery cam, I lay out how I think about it on Eufy solar vs battery, and the sun-hours question comes up on my Eufy SoloCam S220 post.

Who it’s for
- Arlo households that already pay for Arlo Secure
- Anyone tired of hauling a ladder out to recharge a battery cam, with a sunny wall to mount on
- Shoppers who mostly want live view and alerts
Who it’s not for
- Anyone set on no monthly fee who wants clips saved on the camera
- Shaded yards, north walls, and spots under deep eaves
- Anyone who wants my filmed verdict today
vs what I’ve filmed
This isn’t a head-to-head, because I haven’t filmed the Arlo. Gizmodo points out that Eufy’s $100 SoloCam S220 has 8GB of built-in storage. That’s the camera on my Eufy SoloCam S220 post. For the no-subscription angle, see my Reolink Argus 4 Pro post and Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus post.
FAQ
Does the Arlo Essential Solar work without a subscription?
Partly. Arlo says motion notifications and live view work with no plan. Cloud video storage and person, package, and vehicle detection need an Arlo Secure plan.
Is the Arlo Essential Solar worth $99.99?
If you already pay for Arlo Secure, the specs look strong for the price: 2K, a built-in solar panel, and a 14,790mAh battery. If you won’t pay monthly, you lose saved clips. That’s the real cost to weigh.
How long does the battery last in winter?
Arlo rates it up to 6 months on a full charge with no sun. Arlo also says the battery can drain faster in cold weather or with heavy use, and suggests a power-saving mode. I haven’t run it through a winter.
Arlo Essential Solar vs Eufy SoloCam: which one?
It comes down to storage. Gizmodo says Eufy’s SoloCam S220 has 8GB built in, and the Arlo has no storage of its own without a plan or hub. My filmed take on the S220 is here.
When does it ship?
Arlo’s blog says it goes on sale Oct 13, 2026, and the product page shows a ship-by date of Oct 13. Check the live listing.
Can I store video locally?
Not on the camera. Arlo says an optional SmartHub (sold separately) adds local storage.
