Do you need a subscription for the Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus?

Quick take

For live view and alerts, no. To keep recorded video, yes. Ring’s own FAQ says the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus does Live View, two-way talk, motion alerts, 3D Motion Detection, and the siren with no plan. Recording and saving clips takes a Ring Protect subscription, sold separately. It’s $149.99 to pre-order, with five power options, including battery and solar. Amazon lists an Oct 27, 2026 release. I have not filmed this cam. First impressions only.

What I actually know right now

I have not mounted an Outdoor Cam 4K Plus. There is no KeliiDiscovers footage of this camera. Everything below comes from Ring’s product page and FAQ, Amazon’s Oct 7 launch post, and TechRadar’s launch coverage, unless I say otherwise.

The subscription question

This is the part I care about most. Here’s how Ring splits it on its own FAQ:

  • Free, no plan: Live View, two-way talk, real-time motion alerts, 3D Motion Detection, and the siren.
  • Needs Ring Protect: video recording and storage (up to 180 days), Video Descriptions, Video Search, Familiar Faces, Single Event Alert, and Quick Replies.
  • Every purchase comes with a free 30-day Ring Protect trial.

So without a plan, you can watch live and get pinged, but you can’t go back and pull up the clip. I expect that’s the deal-breaker for a lot of no-monthly-fee shoppers. It’s the same question I dig into on Eufy vs Blink vs Wyze.

Ring notes that some of these features aren’t available in Illinois and a few other places because of local laws. Check the fine print on Ring’s page for where you live.

Battery, solar, plug-in, hardwired, or PoE?

Ring says this is the first Ring 4K camera that runs on battery. The versions it lists:

  • Battery: comes with one Quick Release battery pack.
  • Solar: solar panel (USB-C) plus the rechargeable battery pack. Ring lists a 6W USB-C solar panel as a compatible accessory.
  • Plug-in: comes with a 12.5W indoor/outdoor USB-C power adapter.
  • Hardwired
  • PoE (Power over Ethernet)

TechRadar says a 4K Pro version already exists, and this Plus model adds the hardwired and solar options. Spec, not a test I ran.

Price and ship date

  • $149.99 pre-order (Ring page and TechRadar).
  • Pre-order opened Oct 7, 2026 in the US, per Amazon’s launch post.
  • Amazon lists an Oct 27, 2026 release.

Ring’s page also shows higher totals for some versions and bundles. I’m not locking those numbers here. Check the live listing for the exact version you want.

vs what I’ve filmed

Not a head-to-head. I haven’t filmed this Ring. For cams I actually covered, start with Eufy vs Blink vs Wyze for the subscription angle and Eufy solar vs battery for the power question.

FAQ

Does the Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus work without a subscription?

Partly. Ring says Live View, two-way talk, motion alerts, 3D Motion Detection, and the siren work with no plan. Recording and saving video needs Ring Protect.

Is the solar version worth it?

I can’t grade solar runtime. I haven’t filmed it. Ring sells a solar version (USB-C panel plus battery pack) and lists a 6W USB-C panel as compatible. If your spot gets little sun, read Eufy solar vs battery first.

What’s the difference between the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus and the Outdoor Cam 4K Pro?

TechRadar says the 4K Pro already existed and the Plus adds hardwired and solar options. Ring hasn’t laid out a full side-by-side in the sources I checked.

How much does it cost, and when does it ship?

$149.99 to pre-order. Amazon lists an Oct 27, 2026 release. Price can move, so check the live listing.

Is there a Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus review yet?

Not from me. Search only turns up launch news and older Ring models, which is why this is a first-impressions post.

Ring 4K Plus or a Eufy solar cam?

It comes down to how you feel about the monthly fee. Ring needs Ring Protect for saved video. For the Eufy cams I’ve filmed, see Eufy vs Blink vs Wyze.

That’s the launch-day picture for the Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus. If I get one on my wall, I’ll write a real post. Until then, my filmed sisters are Eufy vs Blink vs Wyze 2026 and Eufy solar vs battery.
