eufy SoloCam S340 vs E50: should I wait for the new one?

eufy SoloCam S340 vs E50: should I wait for the new one?

Quick take

If you need a camera up this month, the S340 is still the one I’d buy. I picked it over the $550-plus S3 Pro bundles, and it tracked me day and night. My two gripes were that it drops from 3K to 2K when it’s tracking, and it won’t zoom in on my face with the second lens as I walk up. If those gripes are yours too, the E50 is the one to wait for. Based on what I’ve used, I expect the E50’s two 4K lenses and 12× hybrid zoom to be the fix I asked for. It’s $229.99 MSRP, and eufy says it ships by the end of October. I haven’t had one on a post yet.

The full four-camera battle is here too: E30 vs E42 vs S340 vs S4.

What I actually showed

Not sponsored. I spent my own money.

  • I went with the S340 over the S3 Pro bundles in my last upgrade. I paid $130 when the original price was about $200 per unit. That was the price back then, not today’s.
  • It has two cameras and a much bigger sensor than older models like the S220.
  • It rotates 360°. You get four preset positions, and you can lock the default to one of them.
  • The built-in spotlight gives you color night vision. I still use black and white. It’s clearer, the light stays consistent, and there’s no ghosting, which is a known eufy issue at night.
  • The solar panel adjusts, so you can aim it for max sun.
  • It tracked me walking across the frame, day and night. In pitch black with the light on, I hugged a bush and it caught me. I crawled past it, and it still spotted me. It spotted my cat and other creatures too.
  • The audio outside was very crisp, night and day.
  • Gripe: it goes up to 3K, but only 2K in AI tracking mode or dual lens.
  • Wish: as I walk toward it, I want it to zoom in on my face with the second lens, then zoom back out with the main lens as I get closer. It’s 2024, and AI is built into these things.

In my four-camera battle, the S340 was my #1 for best bang for your buck. It has night vision, color night vision, 3K, and pan and zoom while tracking. It comes with 8 GB of built-in memory, expandable up to 32, and it doesn’t need a HomeBase 3.

Should I buy the S340 now or wait for the E50?

Buy the S340 if you need coverage now. Wait if your gripe is tracking resolution or face zoom. eufy says the E50 ships by the end of October, so waiting costs you about a month, if their date holds.

Does the E50 fix the 3K to 2K drop when tracking?

I don’t know yet. On my unit in 2024, tracking dropped to 2K. eufy says the E50 has two 4K lenses, but it doesn’t say what resolution it records at while tracking. Based on what I’ve used, I expect it’ll do better, but I’ll check.

One note: eufy’s NZ support page now says S340 recording “can raise to 3K” with AI Tracking on (source). That isn’t what I saw on my unit in 2024. Firmware may have changed it, and I haven’t re-tested.

Will the E50 zoom in on a face like I wanted?

Image: eufy

eufy says yes, on paper. OmniTrack locks onto a person and zooms to follow them. Auto-framing zooms in on one person and pulls back when more people walk in. The 12× hybrid zoom is rated to read a face or plate up to 40 ft (eufy E50 page). Based on what I’ve used, I expect this is the exact feature I asked for in 2024.

Is radar worth it over the S340’s PIR?

Maybe. eufy’s own chart lists PIR for the S340 and radar plus PIR for the E50. My S340 caught the bush hug and the crawl on PIR alone. eufy claims radar cuts false alerts from shadows and branches. Spec, not a test I ran.

Night vision: do I still use black and white?

Yes, on the S340. The E50 lists IR plus spotlight color night vision, same as the S340. I have no E50 night footage, so I’m not grading it.

Do I need a HomeBase?

No, for either one. My S340 didn’t need one, and that’s a big reason it ranked #1. eufy says the E50 works on its own with a microSD card up to 512 GB. HomeBase S380 unlocks more AI and storage, and eufy’s UK bundle page lists S380 as HomeBase 3. More on that: HomeBase 3 vs HomeBase 2.

Spec strip

What I said on camera (S340): two cameras; bigger sensor than the S220; rotates 360°; 4 presets; spotlight color night; adjustable solar; tracks day and night; crisp audio; 3K max, 2K when tracking or in dual lens; 8 GB built in, expandable to 32; no HomeBase needed; no monthly fee.

eufy’s specs (SoloCam E50). Specs, not tests I ran:

  • Two 4K lenses on one pan-tilt mount, with 12× hybrid zoom on the second lens
  • Reads a face or plate up to 40 ft
  • OmniTrack AI tracking plus auto-framing for people and vehicles
  • Pan and tilt: eufy’s bullets say 360° / 70°, and its chart says 0–348° pan / 0–70° tilt
  • mmWave radar plus PIR, spotlight, siren, red and blue strobe
  • 5W SolarPlus 2.0 panel and a 10,000 mAh battery
  • microSD up to 512 GB (not included), no monthly fee, no 24/7 recording
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), IP65, two-way audio, Google Assistant and Alexa
  • 3.5 × 3.5 × 5.5 in, 1.7 lb
  • $229.99 MSRP, estimated to ship by the end of October 2026

eufy’s chart for the S340. Specs, not tests I ran: 3K plus 2K lenses; 135°; 0–344° pan / 10–70° tilt; IR plus spotlight color night; PIR; 10,000 mAh; built-in solar; microSD up to 256 GB; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; no 24/7 recording.

On storage, I said 8 GB built in and expandable to 32 on camera. eufy’s current chart says microSD up to 256 GB. Check the live listing for the unit you buy.

Who it’s for

Buy the S340 now if:

  • You need coverage before November
  • 2K while tracking is fine for your yard
  • You want the cheaper pick I’ve already put through its paces

Wait for the E50 if:

  • My gripes are your gripes (resolution while tracking, face zoom)
  • You have a long yard where 40 ft face or plate reads matter
  • Branches and shadows set off false alerts at your place

Skip both if:

  • You need 24/7 recording. eufy’s chart says “No” for both.

vs what I’d buy instead

  • E42: I ranked it last. It cost about what I paid for the S340, performed worse, had no built-in memory, and needed a card or HomeBase 3. Full battle here.
  • E30: my tight-budget pick, and my suggestion if the S340 is sold out. Pair it with a HomeBase. Same battle.
  • eufyCam S4: the superior camera, but at about $350 I’d rather buy more cameras.
  • S3 Pro: the $550-plus bundle I skipped for the S340. Why I went S340.
  • Just want the E50 details? Is the eufy SoloCam E50 worth $229.99?

FAQ

Should I wait for the eufy E50 or buy the S340?

Buy the S340 if you need it now. Wait if tracking resolution and face zoom are your gripes. eufy says the E50 ships by the end of October.

eufy S340 vs E42: which is better?

The S340. I ranked the E42 last. It cost about the same as my S340, had no built-in memory, and needed a card or HomeBase 3.

eufy S340 vs S4: which is better?

The S4 has the better picture and tracking. At about $350, though, I’d rather buy more cameras.

eufy S340 vs S3 Pro: which should I get?

I went S340. I skipped the $550-plus S3 Pro bundle, and its Max color night vision wasn’t much better than black and white.

Does the eufy S340 auto-zoom on faces?

Not mine. It didn’t switch to the zoom lens for my face as I walked up. eufy says the E50 auto-frames and zooms, and I expect that’s the fix.

Does the eufy S340 do 24/7 recording?

No. eufy’s chart lists 24/7 recording as “No” for both the S340 and the E50.

Does the eufy S340 need a HomeBase 3?

No. It works without one, and that’s why I ranked it #1. eufy says the E50 also works on its own and gets more features with HomeBase S380.

What SD card size does the eufy S340 take?

On camera I said 8 GB built in, expandable to 32. eufy’s current chart says microSD up to 256 GB for the S340 and 512 GB for the E50.

Does the eufy S340 actually track?

Yes. Mine tracked me walking, bush-hugging and crawling, day and night.

Does the eufy S340 have color night vision?

Yes, with the spotlight. I still prefer black and white because of ghosting.
