Does the Levoit Eleva 500X air purifier really run itself on Auto Mode?

Does the Levoit Eleva 500X air purifier really run itself on Auto Mode?

Quick take

Yes, from my month with it. Every air purifier I owned before this one had to sit on turbo mode all day. The Eleva 500X doesn’t. In Auto Mode it ramps up when the air needs it, then drops back to a quiet hum you won’t hear in everyday living. That’s why I call it a smart air purifier. We have a newborn and three other kids, and it hasn’t interrupted anything.

What I actually showed

  • I’ve had it for about a month.
  • Auto Mode adjusted the filtering and fan speed by itself and kept the living space comfortable.
  • It kicked up for baking, stovetop cooking, and the air fryer.
  • It reacted when my lawnmower passed an open door or window.
  • When the air cleared, it went back down to a super quiet hum.
  • The display dims or turns off when the room goes dark and brightens when the lights or sun come back. No settings.
  • Tap the top of the unit to see the display in the dark.
  • It has a HEPA filter and a separate carbon filter, so you replace each one on its own.
  • The VeSync app is free. It’s a bonus, not a must.

Does Auto Mode actually work?

That’s what I love most about it. I didn’t have to do anything. Baking, stovetop cooking, and everyday stuff around the house, it switched over and got the job done. The one that surprised me was the air fryer. We’d air fry food, and all of a sudden I’d hear turbo mode kick on in the living room. That told me something about my air fryer. Same thing when my lawnmower went past an open door or window.

My past purifiers ended up on turbo all the time, because most of the time they needed to be there. This one ramps up, then goes right back down. I still run it in Auto Mode. Set it and forget it.

Levoit says, not a test I ran: five sensors track PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10, TVOC, and NO2. That’s particles of different sizes, odors and fumes, and nitrogen dioxide. Auto Mode adjusts fan speed off those readings.

Is it bright at night?

No, and I didn’t set anything up for that. When the room goes dark, the display goes dark too. It turns itself off or dims down so there’s no bright light in your room. When the lights come back on or the sun comes out, the display brightens so you can see it in the daytime. If I need to check it at night, I tap the top. I’m not blinded by the light.

How loud is it?

It’s so quiet. Most of the day it hangs out at a hum you won’t hear in everyday living. I only notice it when it needs to be noticed, when it ramps up for cooking or something coming in from outside. Otherwise it disappears in the back, even as ginormous as it is.

Levoit says, not a test I ran: 22 to 52 dB across its four fan speeds.

Do you need the VeSync app?

No. The VeSync app is free and you can do all kinds of settings on your phone, but it’s a bonus, not a must. Auto Mode does the work on its own.

Levoit says, not a test I ran: the app shows air quality trends, AI Insights, filter life, timers and schedules, and works with voice assistants.

Is it a good pick for a home with a newborn?

We just had a newborn, and I’ve got three other kids. It’s cold and flu season, and allergies are a thing. Having this running has given my family another layer of peace of mind. I’m not saying it prevents any illness. I’m saying it’s part of how our home feels, and it hasn’t gotten in the way of anything.

Levoit says, not a test I ran: MaxSeal keeps airflow sealed so less air sneaks around the HEPA filter. The HEPA and activated carbon pellet filters (DuoShield) are separate pieces.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Auto Mode ramps up and settles back down on its own
  • Reacted to air fryer, baking, stovetop cooking, and lawnmower air
  • Quiet hum most of the day
  • Display dims itself in a dark room
  • Separate HEPA and carbon filters, replaced one at a time
  • Free VeSync app, but it runs fine without it

Cons

  • It’s big. It takes up floor space
  • Two filters on two schedules, carbon every 4 to 6 months (per the manual)
  • Smart features like AI Insights and air trends live in the app

Who it’s for

  • People who want a purifier that runs itself, without babysitting it
  • Busy homes with kids, cooking, and windows that open
  • Living rooms and open spaces

Who it’s not for

  • Small rooms or tight corners where a tall unit won’t fit
  • Anyone who wants lab test numbers from me. I lived with it, I didn’t lab test it. Levoit’s page has their numbers
